What is MS?

MS qualifies you as a specialist surgeon. The 3-year programme includes intensive OT exposure, ward rounds, casualty duty, and a thesis. After MS, doctors typically pursue MCh super-specialty (3 more years) or join hospitals/clinics as consultant surgeons.

Admission is via NEET-PG (currently) / NExT (from 2027-28 onwards), with seat allocation through MCC (50% AIQ + Deemed + AIIMS) and state PG counselling (50%). Total ~40,000 MS/MD seats in India.

Only MBBS graduates with completed internship and permanent state medical council registration are eligible to appear for NEET-PG / NExT and apply for MS seats.
MS is for surgical branches (General Surgery, Ortho, ENT, OBG, Ophthal). MD is for medical branches (Medicine, Pediatrics, Radiology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, etc.). Both are 3-year PG degrees.
Private MS fees range from ₹15 lakh to ₹50 lakh per year, with deemed universities going up to ₹50 lakh+/year. Total course fee can exceed ₹1.5 crore. Government seats are dramatically cheaper.
