What is Optometry?

Curriculum: ocular anatomy, optics, contact lens technology, low vision aids, paediatric optometry, geriatric eye care, dispensing optics, ocular pathology, and clinical internship in eye hospitals.

India has a critical shortage of optometrists vs the WHO recommendation. Eyewear industry (Lenskart, Titan EyePlus, Vision Express) and large eye hospitals (LV Prasad, Sankara Nethralaya, Aravind) are major employers. Strong abroad demand — US/UK/Gulf optometrists earn handsome salaries.

Frequently Asked Questions — Optometry

No — Optometrist (B.Optom): vision testing, eyewear prescription, contact lens fitting, basic eye disease screening. Ophthalmologist (MBBS + MS/MD Ophthalmology): full medical doctor specialising in eye diseases, surgery, advanced treatments. Both work together in eye care.
Yes — strong growth. India has only ~50,000 trained optometrists for 1.4 billion people (vs WHO recommendation of 250,000+). Eyewear retail boom (Lenskart, Titan), growing diabetic retinopathy screening needs, and ageing population all drive demand.
Fresher: ₹2.5–4 lakh in clinics. Lenskart/Titan: ₹3–4.5 lakh + incentives. Hospital (2-4 yrs): ₹4–7 lakh. Govt optometrist: ₹5–7 lakh entry. Own store/clinic (established): ₹8–25 lakh. Abroad (UK/US/Gulf): ₹25–60 lakh.
Yes — after qualifying the respective country's licensing exam (NBEO for US, GOC for UK, OBC for Canada). Indian B.Optom graduates with strong skills are well-placed for international optometry careers.
Limited scope. Optometrists can prescribe ocular lubricants, allergy drops, and basic OTC eye medications. They cannot prescribe systemic medications or perform surgery — that requires ophthalmology (MS Ophth) qualification.
B.Optom (4-yr degree) opens broader career — independent practice, M.Optom, govt jobs, abroad opportunities. D.Optom (2-yr diploma) qualifies for refractionist / vision technician roles only. For serious optometry career, choose B.Optom.
