ITI Admission 2026

What is ITI?

ITIs are vocational training institutes regulated by DGT (Directorate General of Training). Trades are categorised as Engineering (Electrician, Fitter, Welder, Mechanic) and Non-Engineering (Stenographer, Hair & Skin Care, Computer Operator). Successful candidates receive an NCVT/SCVT National Trade Certificate.

ITI graduates are eligible for apprenticeship (1 year stipend), government posts (Railway, Defence, PSU technician roles), and lateral entry to Polytechnic / B.Tech in some states.

ITI Eligibility Criteria 2026

8th or 10th pass for most trades (10th preferred)
Some specialised trades require 12th
Age: 14+ years (no upper limit for most trades)
Medical fitness for certain trades

High-paying trades: (1) Electrician — broad job market including industry, infrastructure, abroad. (2) Welder — Gulf/abroad demand. (3) Mechanic (Diesel, Motor Vehicle) — auto industry + own garage. In most states, ITI is not direct entry to B.Tech. Path: ITI → Polytechnic (lateral entry to 2nd year, available in some states) → B.Tech via lateral entry. UP allows lateral entry to Polytechnic for ITI graduates with relevant trade.

Yes — government ITIs have lower fees, NCVT certification, better placement linkages with PSUs/Railway, and higher trust. Private ITIs vary; choose only those with NCVT (not just SCVT) recognition.

Most engineering trades (Electrician, Fitter, Mechanic) are 2 years. Some non-engineering trades (Stenographer, COPA) are 1 year. A few specialised short courses are 6 months.
