Frequently Asked Questions — BDS

Yes. BDS gives a clear path to independent practice. India has a much lower dentist-to-population ratio than the WHO recommendation, so demand is steady. Income depends on location and practice — urban specialists and well-run clinics earn very well.
BDS cut-offs are usually 30–60 marks below MBBS cut-offs in the same college tier. Government BDS seats fill in the 450+ range; private and deemed admit at much lower NEET scores.
MBBS opens broader medical practice and higher long-term ceiling but is harder to get and longer (5.5 vs 5 yrs). BDS gets you to independent practice faster, with lower entry barrier. If your goal is specifically dentistry, BDS is the direct route.
Yes. After registering with the State Dental Council, BDS graduates can open a private clinic. Most start as associate in another clinic for 1–3 years to gain experience before going independent.
Fresh BDS graduates working in clinics typically earn ₹20,000–₹40,000/month. Government BDS officers earn ₹50,000+ from day one. Private practice income scales with patient base and experience.
Not mandatory but highly recommended for higher income. MDS specialists (Orthodontists, Endodontists, Oral surgeons) earn 2-4x more than general dentists. MDS is also required for teaching roles.
