What is BAMS? (Full Form & Overview)

BAMS — Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery — is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical degree that trains students as Ayurvedic doctors. The programme is recognised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and is offered by government and private Ayurvedic colleges across India, including top institutes like BHU, NIA Jaipur, and IPGT&RA Jamnagar.

BAMS graduates are addressed as Doctor (Dr.) and can register with the State Boards of Indian Medicine to practise Ayurveda. The curriculum integrates classical Ayurvedic texts (Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita) with modern anatomy, physiology, pathology, surgery, and pharmacology — giving graduates a strong dual foundation.

Course structure: 4.5 years of academic study + 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship in a hospital setting.

Frequently Asked Questions — BAMS Admission

BAMS stands for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. It is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical degree (4.5 years of academics + 1 year compulsory rotatory internship) regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM).
Yes. NEET-UG is mandatory for admission to all BAMS courses in India — both government and private colleges. Students must qualify NEET in the same year as admission.
Eligibility: 10+2 passed with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (and English) with at least 50% aggregate (40% for SC/ST/OBC) from a recognised board. Minimum age 17 years on 31 December of the admission year. Valid NEET-UG score required.
Government BAMS colleges: ₹20,000–₹50,000 per year. Private BAMS colleges: ₹1.5 lakh–₹3.5 lakh per year. Total course fees range from ₹1.5 lakh (govt) to ₹15+ lakh (private) for the full 5.5-year programme.
BAMS doctors are primarily trained in Ayurveda. Some states (e.g. Maharashtra, Punjab) allow BAMS graduates to prescribe allopathic medicines after completing the prescribed bridge/pharmacology course; others restrict them to Ayurveda practice. Always verify current state rules.
A fresh BAMS graduate typically earns ₹3–₹5 lakh per annum. With 5+ years of experience or a PG (MD Ayurveda), salaries rise to ₹8–₹15 lakh per annum. Government BAMS Medical Officer posts pay ₹56,100+ per month (Level-10 pay scale) plus allowances.
After BAMS you can: (1) practice as an Ayurvedic doctor, (2) pursue MD/MS in Ayurveda (3-year PG), (3) appear for Ayush government job exams, (4) start your own Ayurvedic clinic or panchakarma centre, (5) work in pharma R&D, (6) move into hospital administration or public health (MHA/MPH).
Yes. Demand for Ayurvedic practitioners is growing globally — the Ayush ministry budget and Ayurveda wellness/tourism market are expanding rapidly. BAMS combines clinical practice with multiple entrepreneurial paths (clinic, pharma, wellness, online consultation).
BAMS (Ayurveda) and BHMS (Homoeopathy) are both 5.5-year AYUSH degrees and equal in regulatory recognition. BAMS has slightly broader scope including surgery, Panchakarma and wider govt recruitment. BHMS is preferred by those drawn to Homoeopathy. Choose based on your interest in the system of medicine.
No. NEET-UG is mandatory by law for BAMS admission in India. Any consultancy promising "direct admission without NEET" is misleading. Rudra Career Guidance helps qualified NEET students secure seats through valid counselling routes — never bypassing rules.
