Frequently Asked Questions — BUMS

BUMS is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical degree in Unani Medicine — a Greco-Arabic medical system. Graduates are addressed as Hakim/Doctor and registered with the State Board of Unani Medicine.
Many BUMS colleges require Urdu/Arabic/Persian as a subject in 10th or 12th. AMU, Jamia Hamdard, and most UP colleges require this; some southern states are more flexible.
Both are equivalent AYUSH degrees (5.5 yrs, NEET-based). BAMS has wider scope of colleges and slightly broader practice in some states. BUMS suits students aligned with the Unani system and Urdu-medium learning.
Like other AYUSH systems, state rules vary. Some states allow limited allopathic prescription after the prescribed bridge/pharmacology course; others restrict practice to Unani only.
₹3–5 lakh fresh; ₹6.7–9 lakh as govt Medical Officer; ₹8–15 lakh+ with experience and own practice.
